The main character is fifteen-year-old Lacy Slucipher, the orphan daughter of American missionaries. As the story opens she is attending her last few months at a private ladies academy in New York City. As any group of girls would be during their adolescence and living with each other day after day, emotions fly.

Not everyone gets along. There are those few girls who dont have the same morals as the rest, which causes a clash amongst them. An all-boys school nearby adds to the emotions and loyalties of the girls friendships. Lacy finds herself drawing close to a young man, but doesnt want to settle for what is expected from everyone around her. Lacy has always felt that there was more to her parents younger lives than she was never told. While serving in Africa, they mysteriously die. This unsettled feeling haunts her dreams, pulling her to Africa every time. She feels the need to go to Africa to seek answers regarding her parents early lives and deaths.

The discoveries she makes in Africa cause her to doubt everything she knew about her family, and even her very existence.
